ALL INDIA SEMINAR ON ‘TREASURING THE FUTURE: CHILDREN’S RIGHTS & REALITIES’, NEW DELHI.

Legal Assistance Forum organized its second All India Seminar on ‘Treasuring The Future: Children’s Rights & Realities’ on 18 th November 2006 at ISIL Auditorium, New Delhi.
 
Law Students Competition
 
As prelude to the seminar, an All India Law Students Competition was conducted in the morning session. For the competition, 48 entries were received from various colleges from all over India, out of which 12 were short listed and invited to stage oral presentation on their respective papers. The Forum made arrangement for their stay and food. The topics that were given to be deliberated upon were:
  1. 'Children in Conflict with the Law' - a Socio-Logal Perspective.
  2. Trafficking in Children - Role for Judicial Activism.
  3. Right to Primary Education and the Reality.

The 12 selected teams made their presentation before an eminent panel of judges consisting of Hon'ble Mr. Justice Madan.B.Lokur, Judge, Delhi Hight Court and Hon'ble Mr. Justice Hemant Gupta, Judge, Panjab & Haryana High Court. The oral presentation and more particularly the question-answer round was very interesting in which the students and talked about child trafficking and Juvenile Justice. They came out with practical suggestions, which were highly appreciated by the judges. The competition was organized with an intention to awaken, sensitise the students towards child rights.

Dr. Usha Tandon, Vice President, LAF delivered the welcome address to an enlightened gathering. She highlighted the achievements of the guests and welcomed each one of them individually. She also welcomed the students who came from all over the country and made sincere efforts in the competition.
Mr. Vijay Hansaria, President, LAF explained the aims and objectives of the Forum and highlighting the activities undertaken so far. Speaking about the problems of children around the world, he said that the justice delivery system must be sensitized to handle Juvenile delinquents in a rightful manner. He highlighted the issues of kidnapping of children for ransom, release of juvenile offenders awaiting trial for a long time, innocent children of female prisoners, who are forced to live in prisons with their mothers, etc.

Messages from His Excellency Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, President of India, His Excellency Shri Bhairon Singh Sekhawat, Vice President of India, Hon’ble Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India and Hon’ble Justice Y.K.Sabharwal, Chief Justice of India were read out by Mr.K.S.Bhati, Treasurer, Mr. Apurba Sharma, Secretary, Assam Unit, Ms. Ritu Bhardwaj, Executive Member, and Ms. Minakshi Sarma, Joint Secretary, LAF respectively. The revered guests were presented flower bouquets by Mr.Anupam Misra, Mr.Jayesh.K.U, Ms. Sneha Kalita and Mr. Akshat Hansaria, Executive members of the Forum.
