LEGAL AID CAMP AT PALAM COLONY, NEW DELHI

The first legal awareness camp of Legal Assistance Forum was organized on 31st July 2005 at Jat Dharamshala, Palam Colony, New Delhi in association with local RWA and Delhi Legal Services Authority.

Smt. Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal, Addl. Distt & Sessions Judge, Member-Secretary Delhi Legal Services Authority and Ms. Pinky, Judge Delhi Judicial Service were special invitees.

250-300 men and women from Palam Colony area were present in the camp. The programme started with the registration of request for legal assistance/advises who were provided free legal advice by advocates of the Forum in separate camera sittings. About 25 persons availed the service on different aspect such as labour disputes, matrimonial problems, land disputes, water supply problems etc.

Later a seminar was held which was addressed by Smt. Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal, ADJ, Sh. Vijay Hansaria, President, Sh. P.I.Jose, Secretary, Sh. K.S.Bhati, Treasurer and Ms. Ritu Bhardwaj, Executive Member, LAF. Other lawyers Mr. Vinod Kumar, Ms.Minakshi Sarma, Sh. Anupam Mishra and Sh. Kanishk Gupta were also present on behalf of LAF.

Sh. P.I.Jose, Secretary of the Forum highlighted the aims and objectives of the Forum and suggested for the mediation and conciliation of disputes among the people. Sh. K.S.Bhati made special efforts to organise the programme at Palam Colony and offered free legal services to those belonging to marginalized section of the society. Ritu Bhardwaj explained the main objects and provisions of the family laws and legal protection available to women, children and parents under the laws. Ms. Jessy Korean talked about provisions of equality and right of women under the Constitution of India.

Smt. Sangeeta Dhingra Sehgal gave details regarding services offered by Delhi Legal Service Authority and disputes related to Electricity, Insurance claims and accidents. Mr. Vinod Kumar, Advocate emphasized the role of conciliation in solving the disputes. Sh. Hansaria made Presidential remarks and spoke about the property disputes and offered the service of Forum in solving them through the Forum so as to avoid the court wrangles.

Sh. Dharamjit Solanki, MLA, Palam Colony also joined the programme and also requested to have similar camp in his constituency for which Sh. Hansaria willingly consented. Sh. Yugal Kishore Diwedi, President of Nagarik Vikas Samiti proposed vote of thanks and invited the Forum to organize similar programmes more frequently with their help for the welfare of the local people. Some representatives of NGOs also spoke on the occasion and praised initiative of the forum.

The proceedings of the camp were reported in various vernacular media including Dainik Jagran, Punjab Kesari and Rajasthan Patrika in their issue of 1st August, 2005.
